From the President

Wisconsin TrailThis is one of my favorite times of year.  I love the summer (even the heat of an 85 degree day), but there’s something so special about fall and September…sending kids off to school, watching the leaves begin to change and looking forward to my FAVORITE holiday- Halloween!!

AROW also has exciting news to share this month.  In this newsletter, AROW is announcing a brand-new sponsorship from the Carton Council.  The Carton Council is providing a financial contribution to support AROW’s Recycle More Wisconsin campaign.  Read more about the Carton Council as our featured Member Highlight below.

In addition, AROW will serve as the statewide coordinator for Wisconsin for America Recycles Day.  Through an agreement with Keep America Beautiful, AROW will promote America Recycles Day in Wisconsin and encourage our members and others to hold community events commemorating the day.  AROW will also co-promote Recycle More Wisconsin in our America Recycles Day outreach.  More on America Recycles Day below.

Finally, while February may seem like a long way off, AROW, with WCSWMA and SWANA, is already heavily in the planning stages for the 2012 WI Integrated Resource Management Conference.  This year’s conference will be held at the Wilderness Territory/Glacier Canyon Lodge in WI Dells, February 29-March 2, 2012.  I’m especially looking forward to our keynote speaker, Jeremy Seifert and the screening of his movie Dive! on Wednesday night.  I guess only those of us in our industry would be so energized to see a film on dumpster diving!  Read more about the conference below as well.  See you in the Dells!

Support AROW, RMW and WLW through WI Gives Back Campaign

WI Gives BackDo you, or someone you know, like wall calendars? Do you enjoy the beauty throughout the state of Wisconsin? If you answered yes to either, or both, of these questions then you are the perfect match for the WI Gives Back campaign. WI Gives Back has developed a beautiful 2012 wall calendar that highlights scenes from around the state.

The best part is that with every purchase of a $15 calendar, $9 will come back to AROW, RMW or WLW. So do your christmas shopping now and get calendars for all your friends, family, co-workers, and yourself, and support AROW and it's programs at the same time.

The calendar campaign runs from September 18th - December 18th. Go to www.wi-givesback.com for more information and to purchase calendars. Be sure to select AROW, RMW or WLW as your organization to support.

Thanks for your support and feel free to spread the word!

Member Highlights

This section highlights some of the great things AROW members are doing, or informs us of who our members are and what they do. If you would like to get highlighted please send a brief announcement to programs@arow-online.org. We will highlight different AROW members in each newsletter.

Carton Council
carton council logoThe Carton Council is a group of packaging companies committed to reducing the environmental impact of cartons by expanding recycling programs across the country and continuously improving their environmental performance. It is comprised of ELOPAK, Evergreen Packaging, SIG Combibloc, Tetra Pak, and Weyerhaeuser. Together with these manufactures and a coast-to-coast team of consultants, the Carton Council is working to increase access for carton recycling, develop sustainable recycling practices and markets as well as create awareness. The Carton Council is consistently identifying, developing support and providing resources for recycling at the city, regional and state level. The Carton Council is committed to dedicating financial resources to create a sustainable recycling infrastructure to ultimately increase more available, stronger and long-term markets for cartons and aseptic packaging.

Through an interactive, grassroots-inspired approach to communications, the Carton Council has developed a distinguished presence in the recycling world, having been present at more than 50 state and industry conferences in 2011 and continually reaching out to communities to support recycling on a local level. The success of these in initiatives is evident in the numbers, as carton recycling access has increased from 22% of US households in 2009 to 35.6% in mid-2011.

Cartons are already accepted for recycling in many Wisconsin cities, including Madison and Green Bay, as well as areas in Waukesha County and Brown County. The Carton Council is proud to be a part of the growing recycling initiative in Wisconsin.
