AROW Recycling Awards for 2009!
The following awards were presented at the 2009 Joint Winter Conference.
Christy Dixon Recycler of the Year:
The Christy Dixon Recycler of the Year is awarded to an individual whose career demonstrates the highest professional standards in the recycling field. AROW Board Member Toral Jha presented the award to Cynthia Moore of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. Cynthia started with the DNR in February, 2001 as the agency's Recycling Team Leader, then moved into her position as the Recycling Program Coordinator. After a brief period in the Office of Great Lakes in 2008, Cynthia has returned to the post of Recycling Program Coordinator. Throughout her tenure with the DNR, Cynthia has been an early advocate of product stewardship and electronics recycling in Wisconsin. She has worked tirelessly on these initiatives on behalf of the state and in collaboration with other Midwestern states with the goal of regional solutions.
Cynthia has also held a strong commitment to working collaboratively with stakeholders and partners, ensuring the DNR's recycling program and priorities support and enhance recycling efforts around the state as well as reflect the needs of the industry's various players. Cynthia's other notable achievements include the 2002 waste sort, which provided valuable data to guide current recycling initiatives and determine industry priorities. She also served as a key liaison to the Governor's Task Force on Waste Materials Recovery and Disposal as well as guiding the modernization of DNR reporting forms and outreach materials.
Outstanding Achievement in Education:
The Wisconsin Be SMART Coalition, which stands for Save Money And Reduce Trash, includes over 50 municipalities serving 1.3 million residents in southeast and northeast Wisconsin. Be SMART provides a variety of waste reduction and recycling education programs to reach municipalities, residents and schools. In 2008 they launched a new statewide website and campaign called Recycle More Wisconsin . This is the first website that provides community specific recycling information to any resident. The site addresses the information needs and barriers to participation identified in research the Coalition conducted in 2007. Also in 2008 the Coalition began a pilot program called Recycling Assistance to Schools. The program provides for onsite assistance and information to area schools in order to establish or improve their recycling programs. Karin Sieg presented the award to Karen Fiedler, Chair of the Wisconsin Be SMART Coalition. The Outstanding Achievement in Education is presented to an individual or group that has excelled in environmental education, specifically related to solid waste and recycling.
Outstanding Achievement in Recycling:
Quad/Graphics , based in Sussex, Wisconsin, is the largest privately held printer of magazines, catalogs and other commercial products in the Western Hemisphere. They are committed to sustaining the environment through responsible stewardship of resources. Their comprehensive recycling program has achieved a corporate average recycling rate for solid waste of 97.9%. Along with recycling of paper, fluorescent lamps, co-mingled containers, metal, plastic, wood and concrete, they continue to seek innovative ways to recover and reuse waste streams. They have been able to develop programs for difficult-to-recycle items such as rubber mats, nylon strapping, railroad bags, polystyrene plastic pieces, paint pails, carpet, and construction and demolition debris. In 2008 Quad/Graphics launched a waste-to-energy program to recover material previously sent to landfills and turn it into electricity. They converted 109,000 pounds of material into electricity in 2008 alone. The Outstanding Achievement in Recycling Award is given to a business or community that has exhibited outstanding results from their recycling program. AROW President Wess Damro presented the award to Chris Rynish of Quad/Graphics.
