Welcome to Wisconsin's Electronics Recycling Advocacy Toolkit

Below is a toolkit that was used to guide AROW members in their efforts to generate local support for Wisconsin's Electronics Recycling Legislation (2009 Act 50). It includes background information, resources and a checklist of steps that could be used to guide local action.

Please note: this page is archived information since this bill has already become law. For more information click here.

Wisconsin Electronics Recycling Bill

Senator Miller (D - Monona) has introduced a product stewardship bill (SB 107) requiring manufacturers of video display devices, computers and printers sold to Wisconsin households to assume responsibility for the collection and proper disposal of electronic devices. It establishes e-recycling goals based on market share and allows for the sale or banking of e-recycling credits that exceed these goals. The bill provides an additional incentive to recover electronic devices from rural counties. The bill also bans the landfilling or incineration of certain electronic devices.

Manufacturers, collectors, retailers and recyclers are regulated under the bill. All except retailers must register with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources. At a time when local governments are facing great pressure to freeze budgets and downsize governemtn, this bill provides a fair, responsible and reasonable funding source for recycling that is directly linked to the product.

AROW Members - Now is the Time to Act!

As Wisconsin's legislators recess for the summer, we need to keep the momentum building for WI's Electronics Recycling Bill - SB 107.  Together, we can ensure a strong movement urging the Assembly to immediately take up the bill during the fall legislative session and resist attempts to weaken the bill.

There are many ways to be involved in this movement.  Immediately, we would like to add additional organizations to the "Support for WI Electronics Legislation" fact sheet and encourage members to join the AROW Product Stewardship Committee List Serve.

In addition, there are other things your organization can do without recreating the wheel.  Many supporters have already created documents to assist you in building support.  Below you will find sample resolutions, statements of support, press releases and editorials as well as ways to be involved in ongoing product stewardship discussions.

Let's continue building a strong coalition behind Wisconsin's Electronics Legislation SB 107!
