Learn How Schools Play an Important Role in Recycling Programs
Intended Audience: responsible units / municipalities / haulers

Have you ever done recycling outreach to your local school district? Are you wondering why would I even bother, or why it has BEEN a bother when you have tried? This workshop was designed to help responsible units, municipalities and haulers realize the benefits of working with local schools to strengthen residential and business recycling programs. Learn how to save community tax dollars by partnering through hauling contracts, merchant MRF tonnage, and resources for school administrators, maintenance staff and classroom teachers. Find out how some of our AROW member communities have made this happen.

PRESENTATION OUTLINE:
1) Why work with schools?
- Improve residential recycling program through school functions & programming
- Increase business recycling efforts through improving school recycling systems and understanding how schools function as a business from a waste management perspective
- Provide community service-learning opportunities/hands-on learning for students that can translate to program benefits
- Use fiscal creativity - mutually beneficial programming
- Directly affect local tax dollars through school operation savings
- Provide accurate information to classroom teachers about recycling & acquaint them with community programs & resources
2) Conducting Effective Outreach to Schools
- What are the needs of the schools?
- Overview of school operations
- Decision-making/operations variables at schools
- Introducing contracting concepts, waste audits to school personnel; RFP's, co-contracting
- Role of haulers
